Do you want to command a room, put people at ease and maybe get a laugh or two? Do you want to become a more dynamic, engaging and audience-focussed presenter? This course is designed to develop Master of Ceremonies skills.

Areas covered in this training course include:

Introduction

  • What Makes a Presenter / MC Engaging?
  • Role of the MC
  • Develop appropriate content for a variety of audiences and events
  • Presence – the 4 key elements
  • Confidence, dealing with nerves and staying present
  • Having a clear objective

Storytelling

  • Principles of story design and structure
  • Building audience rapport through storytelling
  • The use of humour and ‘le jeu’

Vocal Dynamics and Techniques

  • Clarity of diction regardless of accent or dialect
  • “Grounding” or “centering” the voice
  • Avoiding stress to the voice
  • Vocal energy, pitch and pace
  • Projection

Physical Communication and Improvisation

  • Awareness of non-verbal communication “What are we saying without saying anything?”
  • Physical dynamics and “owning the space”
  • Finding the relationship between body and voice
  • The use of humour and ‘le jeu’
  • Impromptu Speaking

Performance and Evaluation

  • Applying techniques learned to prepared presentations
  • Self/ Peer/ Tutor Evaluation

Who should attend?

Those who wish to improve their public speaking skills, whether it be in the workplace, at social occasions, or as part of their studies. Lecturers and teachers would also greatly benefit from this course.

Lisa Brickell has run public speaking skills seminars both in New Zealand and overseas. She has taught at Unitec, Auckland, Waikato and Brighton Universities, and has worked with many companies including Genesis Energy, Coca Cola and DDB. Lisa trained at The Lecoq Theatre School in Paris and at Kiklos Drama School in Italy. She also has a MA in Drama from Auckland University. She has been a Key Note Speaker at Conferences and is a professional MC, actress and comedian, teacher and director.

Kate Bartlett

Presentations Skills Coach

Kate Bartlett is an actor, MC and trainer with over twenty years’ experience in the performing arts and training industries. She has taught extensively at the University of Auckland with academic leaders, senior management, lecturing staff and PG students. Kate trained at Toi Whakaari (NZ Drama School) and has a BA and post graduate Diploma in Drama from Auckland University. She has performed professionally in theatre, film, TV and radio.
