Dr Darren Powell
Dr. Darren Powell is a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Education and Social Work. Previously a primary school teacher, Darren’s research focuses on the childhood ‘obesity epidemic’ and the ways in which corporations and charities are now re-inventing themselves as ‘part of the solution’. He is currently writing a book entitled Childhoood Obesity Inc.: Schools, Corporations and the War on Childhood Obesity. Darren was recently awarded a Marsden Fast-Start Grant by Royal Society Te Apārangi, and is researching how marketing ‘health’ to children in Aotearoa New Zealand shapes children’s health knowledge, health behaviours and health identities.
