Mike completed his PhD at the University of New South Wales in 2004 before undertaking post-doctoral research at the University of Vienna. He began his Auckland position in 2007, with his research exploring interactions between animal (including human) “hosts” and associated microbial communities. Mike’s human microbiome research centres on the airway (respiratory) microbiota and involvement of the gut microbiome in type 2 diabetes and autism. He has >80 publications and was a Thomson Reuters Highly Cited Researcher in 2015. Mike is Vice-President of the NZ Microbiological Society, Co-Convenor of the NZ Microbial Ecology Consortium, and Board Member of the International Society for Microbial Ecology.
